United States Caught In The Maelstrom Toward Which It Has Been Steering

 WELL, NOW WHAT?

(That’s the question posed by a friend to the situation depicted in this meme. My musings in reply are below.)

Doesn’t look good for that ship or the souls aboard. Whether you’re steering or (unfortunately it seems) along for the ride, it’s a dizzying predicament.

Consider though that, as we look at it here, we have what amounts to God’s view of what is happening. The people down there, spinning into the abyss, can’t do anything to escape their inevitable fate.

But the One from Whose eyes we are seeing this and its horrors, does have power — if it is His will — to intervene and rescue the ship and those aboard from sinking and being torn apart in the maelstrom. He could reach down and lift the ship clear of danger. He could send a strong wind blowing with the proper force and direction to help the ship escape. He could create a countercurrent to interrupt the direction of the spin and likewise redirect the ship. Or, the events unfolding there, and enfolding all in the chaos to ensue, might be exactly what He has designed.

Those aboard can’t blame God for what is about to happen to them. The maelstrom was well marked on the charts with which that ship sailed and which heretofore were regularly consulted and diligently studied by captain and crew to set course. Only a mutiny down there, or a generalized  derangement of mind from all previous practice and training, could allow disregard of the charts — once ever-consulted — which gave fair warning of how to steer clear of inevitable doom.

From here we can speculate on how this turns out. If every soul aboard acknowledged their foolishness, repented of their mutiny, and looked up to call upon God to save them, He might hear their pleas and intervene. But no such general cry is heard. Those aboard are merrily about their foolhardy business, and steering ever harder into the destructive current. Nobody can blame God if He leaves such fools to the consequences of the course they are determined to take.
