After Many Evenings Apart

Where in the middle of this night or any other would they ever find each other again? Near or far apart as in truth they might be, the expanse of distance between them now was like an infinity of the infinite.

As far as now he knew she might be a block away, or a mile away; a city or a state away; or maybe — God forbid — already in another lifetime from the one he hoped they still shared; from where he presently stood alone, questioning the magnitude of distance, and lost without her.

Looking up at the night sky and the not quite full moon playing hide-and-seek behind slowly moving silvery gray patches of clouds, he prayed in imagination that she was looking up too from wherever she was. He prayed the kiss he now threw at the bright night orb would be reflected back like light from it to awareness in her that, as it shined upon her lovely face, it especially and lovingly touched her lips.
