The image above is a sign hanging at an entrance “gate” between a local outdoor shopping mall (“lifestyle center”) and one of its surrounding parking areas.
I could wax philosophical in argumentation pro and con about this, but the proliferation of “Thou shalt not”s, even as “WELCOME” mats in the marketplace, appears to be a harbinger of authoritarianism from which “We the people” have been exempted heretofore. It might be possible to blame the trend — far advanced in other places (sadly, Great Britain comes immediately to mind) — to the antisocial, amoral condition of ill-formed, malformed consciences present (or entirely absent — if possible) in our fellow citizens.
In the generations raised on the relativistic dogmas of “values clarification” — where an individual’s experience of life is based on what he or she values, and only that which is valued can be experienced — value trends appear to have brought us to a time when liberty is and will be valued cheaply, and likely therefore to disappear from experience.
What kind of sickness grips society to enable citizens in overwhelming numbers (supposedly) to enthusiastically vote for a candidate for President who promises them “a long, dark winter ahead” as bait for their support? (Hint: Covid Disease is NOT the answer to that question.)
As restrictive laws proliferate, we are seeing proliferation of other ominous signs as well. Public stoning for punishment of transgressors — long condemned by modern, enlightened societies — is beginning to manifest in other forms. Tolerance of the ascendant faction’s destructiveness and violence does not bode well for the safety of those in opposition.
